We are searching for a talented VP Development to be based out of our offices in San Francisco, California.


As a leading developer  and manager of mixed-use, commercial and multi-family housing, Forest City offers challenging professional opportunities.  As a Senior Project Manager in our San Francisco office, the chosen candidate will be a valuable partner in projects to include:


Pier 70 is a former shipyard on San Francisco’s eastern waterfront. Our master development area of 28 acres is a mixed-use project, which is expected to include 3.2 million total square feet, consisting of 900,000 to 1.8 million square feet of office space, approximately 360,000 square feet of traditional retail, local production, and cultural/community uses, 1,000 to 2,000 residential units, approximately 2,000 parking spaces and 7 acres of waterfront parks.


5M is a fully entitled, mixed-use project in downtown San Francisco. The project is comprised of an office building of approximately 633,000 square feet and an apartment building with approximately 295 residential units. 5M would create significant new open spaces for the neighborhood. The project is designed to house a dynamic ground-floor mix featuring local retail and arts, cultural and community uses.



The VP Development is responsible for identifying, executing and development of multiple projects or multiple phase projects. Involved in multiple key development activities, such as: deal structure and negotiations, site/asset acquisition, entitlements, underwriting, land planning, design, construction, financing, lease-up and all other aspects of development. May have assistants, associates, managers, and/or directors reporting to them.

  • Deal negotiations, sets budgets, strategic direction on all aspects of a large project or a series of smaller projects.                     
  • Market Review and Research on the specific markets that the development project impacts.
  • Project management: sets goals and execution plans for the team. Negotiates entitlements and benefits packages with the City. Manages the team on all aspects of deal execution from entitlements documents to ground leases to disposition to closing acquisition documents.
  • Sets strategy for marketing, communications and community outreach.                  
  • Vendor and contract Management - given new systems, this is an increasing percentage of the role - processing invoices and more administrative functions with vendor and consultant management.
  • Negotiates Contracts and Consultant Management - typically larger contracts over $250,000 i.e. Architects, attorneys, etc.                    
  • Associate management 25% - need the standard language on overseeing a development team, etc.


  • This position requires an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Development Design/Planning, Law, or related discipline.
  • An additional degree that is preferred for this position include: Master Degree in Real Estate Development. 
  • 8-10 years of required progressively responsible experience in direct real estate development.   Vertical development experience a must.   
  • Experience curating retail tenants or coordinating creative placemaking in a real estate context is highly preferred             

  • Required skills for the position include: excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to interact with various officials, consultants and community groups, strong problems solving skills, creative thinker and solid organization and leadership skills, working knowledge of the principles and practices of real estate, ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines, and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.     
  • A preferred skill for this position include: SAP.
  • This position requires up to 25% travel.
